Marupoyo: The Round Chick's Adventure
Physics-Based Ball Rolling Platformer
Role - Level Designer
Scope: Design, Prototyping, 120+ Level Designs, Visual Implementation
Target Audience: All ages (Casual to Precision Platforming)
OVERVIEW
Marupoyo is a single-player, physics-based platformer where players navigate a ball through physics-driven obstacle courses. Built from the ground up to balance momentum-focused physics with intuitive controls, the game spans over 120 distinct levels alongside an inclusive Family Mode designed to expand accessibility for younger or casual players.
CORE MECHANICS & DESIGN
• Momentum & Physics-First Design: Player movement relies strictly on real-world kinetic physics. Success comes from understanding inertia, surface angles, and speed preservation rather than static tile-based platforming. • Accessibility & Family Mode: To make physics platforming friendly across skill levels, Family Mode removes player death and level restarts, allowing players to practice momentum and problem-solving without punishment. • Prototyping Obstacles: Designed interactive hazards, moving platforms, ramps, and physical triggers that dynamically react to the ball's weight and impact.
LEVEL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Mechanics & Obstacle Prototyping • Established core physics interactions early (friction, bounce, gravity modulation). • Built a modular toolkit of physical obstacle. • Ensured every obstacle was readable.
Level Progression & Pacing (120+ Levels) • Early Tier (Levels 1–30): Teaches momentum control, basic slopes, and landing precision without complex hazards. • Mid Tier (Levels 31–80): Introduces more obstacles and with typically one main obstacle being explored • Expert Tier (Levels 81–120+): Precision platforming challenges testing split-second momentum shifts and using multiple types of obstacles in one level.
Visual Implementation & Readability • Handled full visual assembly, environmental lighting, and asset placement to maintain clear visual hierarchy.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Inclusive Accessibility: Built a zero-friction Family Mode removing death/restarts for younger or casual players.
120+ Unique Levels: Designed and playtested every level single-handedly with a focus on smooth difficulty pacing.
Tuned Momentum Controls: Fine-tuned physics parameters to ensure the ball feels responsive, satisfying, and predictable.
