Mole-tiple Paths

Mole-tiple paths was an entry for VimJam4. The jam focus was Checkpoints and the theme was Cross Paths. You had 10 days to make a game and this was my entry. I worked in a group of 3. The game was created in Unity. In Mole-tiple Paths, you are Paws, an adventurous explorer looking to find the lost treasure of Mole-vana. Explore an uncharted cave with treasures buried deep within. Explore the labyrinth of the mines in search of the treasure. Throughout the cave, you cross paths with other adventurers looking to find the lost treasure within. Will you help them?

Overview

The game features checkpoints that allow you to save your progress and respawn at them 3 times however to activate a checkpoint you must first sacrifice either your max health or your max ammo. This was done to create situations where you have to carefully decide if it is worth it or not to activate a checkpoint as you might lose your progress, however activating a checkpoint will overall make you weaker. In terms of the theme of “Cross Paths”, you cross paths with other moles scattered around the cave and also the cave itself is quite labyrinthian and the paths cross frequently. Overall, we finished 69th out of 152. I am overall happy with the quality of the game and love the overall aesthetic of the game, however, I wish our implementation of the themes / focus was more unique. For instance, adding a tile in which you can dig through but only dig through straight (as you cant see where you are going), until you either come out of the other side or you hit a wall, then you can go into a different direction straight again until you either hit a wall again or come out of the other side of the tile. This is similar to the ice mechanics used in games such as pokemon (within the gyms). This would have added a puzzle element to the game and also fit more within the theme of “Cross Paths”. However, we felt that we did not have enough time since we were doing it alongside full-time jobs.

Goals for the Project:

  • Make a game that feels “satisfying” to play.

  • Make a game that is as complete of a product as possible

  • Exercise my programming skills for Unity.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Programming (mainly the enemies and the character controller)

  • Sound Design

  • Writing

  • Assisted with level design

  • Improving game feel (adding screen shake, movement particles, death particles etc)
